Atlético Junior and Internacional de Bogotá drew 2-2 at the Romelio Martínez stadium, in a Colombian First Division match that had everything: home advantage, visiting team reaction, and a finish that left a bitter taste for both teams, who fail to climb the standings.
How the match unfolded
The squad led by its starters on the pitch came out determined to secure three home points and found quick reward with the opening goal before the half-hour mark. Internacional de Bogotá, meanwhile, suffered a forced substitution in the first half that altered their setup, but managed to stay organized and reach halftime with a minimal defeat.
In the second half, Atlético Junior was more decisive in the final meters and stretched the lead with a goal from a substitute, taking advantage of changes made from the bench. However, Internacional de Bogotá refused to give up and, with offensive adjustments, found the equalizer that sealed the final result in a stretch where the match opened up completely.
The closing stages of the match featured more substitutions than clear chances, with both teams seeking the rival goal but failing to find the winning goal. The referee handed out yellow cards to both sides and the 2-2 remained firm until the final whistle.
Goals and key moments
25' Jesús Rivas opened the scoring for Atlético Junior, who arrived with authority in the rival area in one of their best approaches in the first half.
29' Internacional de Bogotá had to make an early change from the bench, with Miguel Amaya coming in for Mateo Rodas due to injury.
71' Francisco Fydriszewski, who had come on minutes earlier replacing Luis Muriel, made it 2-0 for Atlético Junior and seemed to be steering the home side toward victory.
74' Just three minutes later, Fabricio Sanguinetti scored to cut the deficit for Internacional de Bogotá and put his team firmly back in the fight for the result.
Between the 59th and 80th minutes both coaches made strong moves from the bench, with up to six substitutions in total, seeking variations that would decide the match in their favor without definitive success.
The numbers
The statistics reflected an even match: the xG slightly favored Internacional de Bogotá (1.81 versus 1.69 for Atlético Junior), despite the home side holding the higher partial score for much of the game.
In possession and passes, Atlético Junior was superior (52% possession, 326 completed passes out of 382 attempted), while Internacional de Bogotá was more precise in offensive play despite having less ball circulation (288 out of 355 passes).
Total shots remained virtually level (19 to 18 in favor of the home side) and the same occurred with shots on target, 4 for each team. Atlético Junior committed more fouls (13 versus 7) and saw more yellow cards on the disciplinary record (2 versus 1).
How the table stands
The draw does not help either team escape from the troubled zone of the table. Internacional de Bogotá remains in 13th position with 14 points in 14 matches played, the result of 2 wins, 8 draws and 4 losses, with a negative goal difference (-4).
Atlético Junior, meanwhile, continues in last place in the overall standings, in 17th position, with just 10 points in 12 matches disputed, after 2 wins, 4 draws and 6 losses, with a goal difference of -4 despite having scored 18 goals.
At the top, the fight for first place continues to be led by América de Cali with 27 points, followed by Deportivo Cali with 25 and Atlético Nacional with 23, in a table where the upper zone looks increasingly competitive.
Our analysis
In our view, the draw between Atlético Junior and Internacional de Bogotá clearly exposes the defensive shortcomings of both teams, which combined scored four goals in just 49 minutes of effective play between the first and last goal.
It seems to us that Fydriszewski's entry was decisive for the home side, which despite going 2-0 up failed to maintain the advantage, a pattern that, if repeated, could continue complicating its already precarious situation in the table.
Internacional de Bogotá, on the other hand, showed character to reverse the adverse scoreline, although its position in the middle of the table continues to reflect the irregularity it is experiencing in the championship, with more draws than wins in its recent matches.
