Fortaleza CEIF and Millonarios drew 1-1 at the Metropolitano de Techo stadium, in a match corresponding to Colombia's Primera A that was decided in the final minutes, when Rodrigo Ureña scored for the visiting team after an evenly-matched encounter that was intense in its conclusion.

How the match unfolded

The match at Techo had a balanced development, with Fortaleza CEIF controlling the ball somewhat more but failing to translate that dominance into consistent offensive clarity. Millonarios, for its part, proved more effective in the final third throughout the ninety minutes.

The first half saw a yellow card for Leonai, who was cautioned late in the first period and gave way to Stiven Vega in the 45th minute itself. Immediately after the restart, Leonardo Pico was also cautioned in the 46th minute, setting a physical tone that was maintained throughout much of the encounter.

The home side made their first substitution in the 59th minute, when Mariano Vázquez came on for Juan Garcia seeking to refresh the attack. The stretch between the 71st and 76th minutes saw the most rotation, with both teams making changes and accumulating cautions, in a match that was decided only in the stoppage time of the closing stages.

Goals and key moments

The match's central detail was completed in the 88th minute, when Rodrigo Ureña scored for Millonarios to establish the final 1-1, in a play that came just seconds before another decisive event: the expulsion of Francisco Chaverra, also of Millonarios, in the same play as the goal.

The 71st-minute substitutions proved key to the outcome: Millonarios made changes with the entry of David Silva for Juan Cuadrado and Daniel Ruiz for Andrey Estupiñán, while Fortaleza CEIF responded with the entry of Julio Sinisterra for Jhonier Salas and Ítalo Montaño for Sebastián Navarro.

In the closing stages, Fortaleza CEIF made their final change with the entry of Franco Pulicastro for Sebastián Herrera and Jhon Solís for Santiago Vivas, both in the 86th minute, seeking to hold the result in the moments before Millonarios' goal. The match ended with Joan Cajares being cautioned in the first minute of stoppage time.

The numbers

The statistics reflect an even match in volume of play but with nuances. Fortaleza CEIF dominated possession with 56% compared to Millonarios' 44%, and also surpassed them in total shots (17 to 13), corners (3 to 5, in favor of the visitors) and completed passes, with 442 compared to the Bogotá team's 325.

However, Millonarios was more precise where it matters most: they generated five shots on goal against just three for the home side, a difference that proved decisive in the final result. Fortaleza CEIF, on the other hand, accumulated more fouls (15 to 11) and finished with an additional yellow card compared to their rivals (3 to 2).

The red card to Francisco Chaverra in the final minutes was the only expulsion of the match and left Millonarios down to ten men for the stoppage time moments, although the result was already settled by then.

How the standings look

With this draw, Millonarios maintains their fifth position in the Primera A with 22 points in 14 matches played, the result of 5 wins, 7 draws and 2 losses, and a goal difference of +7. The Bogotá team continues fighting for top positions, though still far from leader América de Cali, who has 27 points.

Fortaleza CEIF, meanwhile, remains in the lower zone of the standings, in 15th place with just 11 points in 13 matches, the result of 1 win, 8 draws and 4 losses, with a negative goal difference of -5. The draw extends a winless streak for the home side, who haven't won in several matches.

Recent precedents confirm the trends: Millonarios has accumulated three consecutive draws before this match, while Fortaleza CEIF is without a win in their last five matches, with four draws and a loss in that span.

Our take

In our view, the 1-1 result is fair given what both teams showed, though with different nuances for each. Fortaleza CEIF, despite dominating possession and creating more chances, lacked the accuracy needed to sustain a partial advantage, something that explains much of their position in the table.

Millonarios, for their part, demonstrated once again that ability to stay composed in the final stages, something they had already shown in previous matches with stoppage-time draws. Rodrigo Ureña's goal in the 88th minute is proof of a team that doesn't give up, though the string of draws is also starting to weigh on their ambitions to climb positions.

For Fortaleza CEIF, in our assessment, the point tastes like little given the match's development, and the winless streak deepens a complicated reality for the rest of the season. The challenge is converting territorial dominance into clinical finishing, something that is currently eluding them.
