Independiente Santa Fe took away a road victory at the Metropolitano Ciudad de Itagüí stadium by defeating Independiente Medellín 1-0, in a match corresponding to Colombia's First A division that was marked by the number of yellow cards and the tactical movements of both coaches from the bench.
How the match unfolded
The match in Itagüí had a first half full of tension, reflected in the early cautions. Independiente Medellín was the team that took the initiative with the ball, something that was confirmed in the final possession numbers, but failed to translate that dominance into clear chances against the rival goal.
Santa Fe, for their part, showed organization and took advantage of the spaces left by a Medellín side that pushed insistently throughout the 90 minutes without finding the necessary effectiveness to equalize the score.
Goals and key moments
The development of the encounter was sprinkled with yellow cards from the start. At 30 minutes, Alexis Zapata was cautioned for Santa Fe, and shortly after, at the close of the first half, Independiente Medellín added two more yellows with Keiner Klinger (38') and Agustín Martegani (43'), which forced an immediate substitution at the start of the second half.
Already at minute 45, Medellín made changes from the bench with the entry of Halam Loboa for Baldomero Perlaza and Frank Fabra for the cautioned Klinger. In the second half, Santa Fe continued accumulating cautions with Jáder Obrian (48') and Emmanuel Olivera (52'), while Medellín added Luis Escorcia's (58'). The parade of substitutions continued with the exit of Alexis Zapata for Maximiliano Lovera (67') in Santa Fe and the entry of Carlos Lucumí for Yony González (70') in Medellín. At 73 minutes Daniel Torres was cautioned, who minutes later, at 76', was replaced by Kilian Toscano, in the same play in which Hugo Rodallega came on for Franco Fagúndez.
Near the end, Medellín sought alternatives with the entry of Nivaldo Erazo for John Montaño (88'), but the closing of the match was marked once again by cards: Didier Moreno and Alfonso Simarra saw yellow in the first minute of stoppage time. Santa Fe completed their list of changes with the entry of Iván Scarpeta for Nahuel Bustos (90'+3') and Ewil Murillo for Jhojan Torres (90'+4'), maintaining the minimal advantage until the final whistle.
The numbers
The statistics reflect an evenly matched game in intensity, although with greater ball control for the home side. Independiente Medellín dominated possession with 60% versus 40% for Santa Fe, and also surpassed them in total shots (20 against 16) and corners (7 against 5).
However, in shots on target both teams were evenly matched with 6 attempts each, which partly explains the parity of the result. Santa Fe had more effectiveness between the posts, with 6 saves against Medellín's 4, a statistic that could explain why the home side failed to find the equalizer despite their insistence.
As for discipline, Medellín accumulated 5 yellow cards to Santa Fe's 4, with no red cards in either camp. Medellín's ball control was also evident in their passing: 383 completed out of 439 attempted, well above Santa Fe's 241 of 297.
How the table stands
With this result, Independiente Santa Fe reached 22 points in 12 matches played, with a record of 6 victories, 4 draws and 2 losses, sitting in fifth position in Colombia's First A, with a goal difference of +7.
Independiente Medellín, meanwhile, remain in seventh place with 20 points, the product of 6 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses in 12 matches, with a goal difference of +3. The Antioquia side are three points behind the top five group, in a table led by América de Cali with 27 points.
Our assessment
Our assessment is that Independiente Medellín paid a high price for their lack of accuracy despite controlling more of the ball and generating more offensive volume: dominating possession and total shots is of little use if final effectiveness doesn't follow through, and that was the home side's main problem in Itagüí.
Santa Fe, on the other hand, showed the solidity that has characterized them in recent matches, adding another road victory that keeps them firm in the fight for the top positions. The number of cautions in both squads also speaks to a tight, physical duel, where neither of the two teams was willing to give ground easily.
