Cerro Porteño prevailed without question 3-0 over Sportivo Luqueño at Luis Alberto Salinas Tanasio Stadium, in a match corresponding to Paraguay's First Division that the blue and red team largely decided in the first half and sealed in the second half with a third goal that completed the scoreline.

How the match unfolded

From the start, Cerro Porteño showed effectiveness and punch to assert their superiority against a Sportivo Luqueño that, despite controlling the ball throughout the ninety minutes, failed to translate that possession into clear scoring opportunities.

The home side, arriving at this clash with the urgent need to earn points to move away from the bottom positions of the table, could not contain the early blows from Cerro Porteño, who with two goals in the first half practically decided the outcome of the match.

In the second half, Sportivo Luqueño tried to reorganize with several attacking substitutions, but Cerro Porteño struck again at 63 minutes to definitively seal the result and cruise through the remaining minutes.

Goals and key moments

The first blow came at 12 minutes, when Pablo Vegetti opened the scoring for Cerro Porteño and set off alarm bells at home.

Just sixteen minutes later, at 28', Lucas Merolla extended the visitors' lead with the second goal, leaving the match practically decided before halftime.

In the final stretch of the first half there were yellow cards for Lucas Ramón Barrios Cáceres (32') and Dante Nicolas Campisi (36') for Sportivo Luqueño, as well as a caution for Derlis Osmar Rodríguez Maciel (33') at Cerro Porteño.

Already in the second half, at 63 minutes, Rodríguez Maciel himself, who had come off the bench minutes earlier alongside Mateo Klimowicz and Guillermo Benitez, sealed the 3-0 for the visiting team.

The end of the match saw more substitution activity than excitement: Jonathan Gabriel Torres, Jorge Morel and Gastón Giménez came on for Cerro Porteño, while Marcelo Ojeda, Lautaro Comas, Marcelo Pérez and Walter González did likewise for Sportivo Luqueño. Giménez (81') and Iván Maggi (85') saw yellow in the closing minutes.

The numbers

The statistics reflect an even match in terms of play volume but unbalanced in effectiveness. Sportivo Luqueño had more possession (58% against 42%) and more total shots (18 against 17), but Cerro Porteño was more clinical in the final third, with 6 shots on target compared to 4 for the home side.

The clearest stat is expected goals: Cerro Porteño generated an xG of 2.74 against Sportivo Luqueño's 0.98, a difference that proved to be a faithful reflection of what happened on the scoreboard.

In corners, the visitors also prevailed 9-7, while fouls were even (15 for Cerro Porteño, 14 for the home side). Sportivo Luqueño was the only side caught in an offside position twice, while Cerro Porteño had no offsides. The yellow card tally closed at 2-2.

How the table looks

With this defeat, Sportivo Luqueño continues at the bottom of the table, in ninth place, with just 13 points in 14 games played, the result of 4 wins, 1 draw and 9 losses, and a very poor goal difference of -13.

Cerro Porteño, on the other hand, climbs positions and sits seventh with 20 points in 14 matches, after 6 wins, 2 draws and 6 losses, with a goal difference of +4 that keeps them in contention for the top spots.

At the top, Club Olimpia and Libertad share the summit with 26 points each, followed closely by 2 de Mayo with 25, in a table where Sportivo Luqueño finds itself increasingly far from the fight zone.

Our assessment

Our assessment is that this result confirms a worrying trend for Sportivo Luqueño, which continues to accumulate defeats that sink it deeper into the bottom of the table despite showing, as in this match, greater ball possession. The problem doesn't seem to be generating play volume, but rather a lack of effectiveness in the opponent's area, something that becomes evident once again with just 0.98 xG throughout the entire match.

For Cerro Porteño, meanwhile, this victory represents an important relief in an irregular semester, marked by alternating results as seen in their last five games. The effectiveness shown in this duel, with three goals from different players, is a sign that the blue and red team can maintain a competitive level when they resolve the key moments of the match well.
