Paraguay's División Intermedia: what it is and how promotion works
October 4, 2026 · 4 min
Below the Primera División is the Intermedia, the gateway to the elite of Paraguayan football. It is a tough league, with clubs from Asunción and the interior fighting every round to go up. This is how it works.
The country's second tier
The División Intermedia is the second tier of Paraguayan football, just below the Primera División. It is run by the APF and has had 16 teams since 2006.
Historic clubs that dropped from the Primera play alongside neighbourhood clubs from Asunción and teams from the interior, which makes it one of the most varied leagues in Paraguay.
How many go up and how many go down
The champion and the runner-up of the Intermedia are promoted directly to the Primera División for the following season.
At the other end, the bottom three are relegated to the third tier. That is why the Intermedia is played with the same tension at the top and at the bottom.
The latest champions
In 2024 the champion was Recoleta, promoted together with Tembetary. In 2025 Rubio Ñu won its eighth title in the division and went up with Sportivo San Lorenzo.
Both recent champions now play in the Primera, and Recoleta even reached the last 16 of the 2026 Copa Sudamericana on its first international adventure.
