October 4, 2026 · 5 min
In Paraguay there is one match that splits families, neighbourhoods and offices: Olimpia against Cerro Porteño. It is the Superclásico of Paraguayan football and has been played for more than a century. Here are its history and numbers.
Two giants of Asunción
Olimpia, founded in 1902, is the oldest and most successful club in the country, with 48 league titles and three Copa Libertadores. Cerro Porteño was born in 1912 in Barrio Obrero and is the other great popular club, with 35 titles according to the Paraguayan press.
Together they gather most of the country's fans. That is why their match is called the Superclásico: not just a derby, but the derby.
How it all started, in 1913
The first Superclásico was scheduled for 10 August 1913, but Olimpia did not turn up and Cerro won by walkover — the only one in the derby's history.
A few weeks later, in September 1913, the two teams finally met on the pitch. Since then hundreds of matches have been played across league, cups and friendlies.
A very even derby
What makes the Superclásico special is how close it is. In the historical record collected by Wikipedia, Olimpia has 127 wins, Cerro Porteño 123 and there have been 116 draws: a tiny gap after more than a century.
The player with the most Superclásicos is Ever Hugo Almeida, Olimpia's legendary goalkeeper, with 57, and the derby's top scorer is Saturnino Arrúa with 11 goals. The biggest win was a 5-0 for Olimpia in a 1916 friendly.
Where it is played today
Cerro Porteño plays at La Nueva Olla, with about 45,000 seats, the largest stadium in the country. Olimpia, while its new stadium is being built, plays its big games at Defensores del Chaco.
